FORMER FACULTY MEMBERS (in touch with us)

William ‘Bill’ Aller* – after attending UCLA, and receiving his BA at Univ. of Wash.; Mr. Aller also attended Burnley School of Arts and earned his Master’s degree in Education along the way from Whitworth. He came to Spokane

in 1949 and taught at Rogers, spending his entire teaching career there, becoming the Head of the Dept. of Fine Arts; he retired in 1979. He designed the art and homemaking addition on the east side of the building plus fought for the turn-in, off Wellesley

when the street was widened. After leaving Rogers he taught at

the Community College and drove to Wilbur every Saturday to teach art to the town folk, farmers’ wives and children there.

Ten years prior to that, in 1969, Bill had retired from the US Navy as a Lt. Commander. He is the founder and curator of

the US Naval Museum at the Naval Reserve Complex in NW Spokane. If any of you are bored and want something to do,

you might visit Mr. Aller at the museum and he’ll show you around (be prepared to spend 3-4 hours; Lloyd did).

Bill Aller has kept track of all the students in his home-room and knows how many have died; he also tries to keep track of fellow faculty as well in his annual. He is full of Rogers’ lore and has boxes of old stuff containing Rogers’ history. If all the historical stuff could be contained, Aller is afraid that just like

the mural that one of his classes painted on a hall wall, when he turned his back, it was painted over.

In addition to painting and sketching, Mr. Aller loves sailing. However, due to his age, he has his sailboat for sale. Any takers? Mrs. Aller is also a retired teacher and they are world travelers; they’ve been to Europe, including Russia, Holland, Finland, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. They have raised two boys, one a cardiac pulmonary tech at Deaconess and one a professional photographer in Portland. Because of the psychology of teaching today, Mr. Aller said he would NOT

enter the profession if he were just entering the field now.

________________________

Larry Coleman* a popular coach, Mr. Coleman taught Biology and coached baseball and inter-mural sports at Rogers.

He earned his BA from Gonzaga, earned his masters degree in Bio-Chemistry, and began teaching at Rogers in 1954. He retired in 1986 after 39 years of teaching. He also taught at the Sacred Heart Psychiatric Unit for eight years.

Mr. Coleman grew up on the 1700 block of East Wellesley, a block east from Rogers; the house still stands. Later, he was a member of the same naval unit as Mr. Aller – the 1319th’s. Larry and his wife raised four children, moving four times in 30 years. All four children have degrees and are gainfully employed; Larry Jr. lives in Alabama with their two grandchildren, both girls.

On a normal afternoon, Larry works his dogs; he is a member of the American Kennel Club and a delegate, which requires some traveling. The only traveling he does is showing

his dogs—between Spokane and New York City.

When asked what his favorite food was, he answered,

A good buffalo steak”. Larry had some “serious” surgery done last year and back surgery earlier this year. His wife is currently very ill; we send our best wishes and prayers for her comfort.

Bart Haggin* – After receiving his BA from Univ. of Wash., Mr. Haggin began teaching English & Drama at Rogers

in 1958. He retired after 30 years, in 1988. One year later he made a trip to Japan and has a condo in Hawaii to which they migrate annually. He and his wife have raised three children, all gainfully employed, and have one grandchild and one on the way!

Mr. Haggin is involved in civil interests, e.g., present and future land use, is on many land use boards, and ran (unsuccess-fully) for Spokane City Council but continues to write letters

to the editor of the Spokesman Review on local issues. For a “hobby”, Mr. Haggin is a runner, running approximately 2000 miles a year, including in our local Bloomsday. He would NOT become a teacher again if he had it to do over.

E.J. Hjortedal* – a 1947 graduate of Rogers, Mr. H earned his BA from St. Olaf’s and was hired by Mr. Warren Morgan, (many of us knew from Arlington) in 1957. He received his Masters degree from Eastern in 1958, and taught Biology & Publications at Rogers; a lot of this work produced our award-winning 1960 annual. He said he would “probably” be a teacher

if he had it to do over again.

Photography is Mr. H’s one and only hobby and his favorite restaurant would be a buffet diner with “good, whole-some food”. He and his wife have “down-sized” and now live on Upriver Drive. They have been on a cruise to Hawaii, to the Caribbean twice, and have taken their family to Norway, where

his family originated. They raised two boys—one manufacturing building trusses, and one a cost accountant for Columbia Lighting -- and one daughter, who is employed at SFCC in the faculty computer department.

__________________

Leonard Johnson – taught Industrial Arts at Rogers; earned his BA & B.Ed., from Wash. State College, and taught

at Rogers for five years, from 1956 to 1961, eventually retiring

in 1986. Mr. Johnson later received his Ph.D. and moved to California where he worked as a psychologist for a time, returning to Spokane the same year as Tracy Walters did. Tracy coached at one of the colleges near where Dr. Johnson lived in California.

Dr. Johnson and his family have moved four times and have raised two boys and one girl. They have been on cruises, to Europe and go to Mexico every winter. They live at Priest Lake have eight grandchildren. He enjoys hunting and fishing with his boys and Tracy Walters.

_______________

Imogene L. Knight – was educated at Wash. State College and taught English at Rogers from 1958 to ????). Imogene lives in Spokane and wrote that she appreciated the invitation to our reunion but was unable to attend because it’s the same weekend

as her own high school reunion, and she’s a part of that committee. She asked that we extend her best wishes to all the “great 1960 grads” and says that she’s sorry she won’t have the chance to

see us and learn of our accomplishments of the past 45 years.

___________________________

Harry Merrick* – taught Science at Rogers and later at SCC for two years. He attended the College of Idaho, Colorado A&M, got his BA from EWCE, and later, his Masters’ Degree from Wash. State Univ. before he transferred to Rogers. Harry

was hired by Warren Morgan (former principal at Arlington

Grade School) to teach at Arlington. He started at Rogers in

1957 and retired 30 years later in 1987 and said he’s received

lots of satisfaction from being a teacher!

Harry helped raise three boys and is now single, with

ten grandchildren and four foster grandchildren. He travels and

just returned from Germany, where he visited places where he

was stationed 50 years ago. His hobbies include inventing (he holds three registered patents) and has written and published

three novels. He lives in a large, earth/solar house that he built

in Chattaroy and he builds others as well!

Robert Poffenroth* – taught Social Studies and was a coach at Rogers. He got his BA at EWCE, but also attended Gonzaga and the University of Washington. He began at Rogers in 1955 and retired in 1980. He likes to play handball and cards and “just kickin’ back and enjoying life”. He and his wife go to the hot springs in Canada each year and have three adult children—twin boys who are 50 years old and another boy who’s 44. He has 7 grandkids, 6 boys & 1 girl.

_____________________

Tracy Walters – taught math, history and coached at Rogers; he attended EWCE, and got his BA at Washington State College. He began teaching at Rogers in 1956 and retired in 1982.

Mr. Walters is one of Rogers’ most high profile faculty members. Very involved in high school, college and Olympic coaching, he’s the man sitting high on the scaffold announcing the names and times for Spokane’s Bloomsday elite. He and his wife own “Walters’ Fruit Ranch” on Greenbluff, and loves to give tours, especially to children. Mr. Walters is a fan of his grand-daughters’ volleyball team and is active in church, the Hillyard Rotary – from which he helps raise money for college scholarships for only Rogers’ students!

When they have time Tracy and his wife go bow hunting in Alaska and the Artic for Caribou (actually packed one out!) and travel across the United States and Europe working on genealogy projects, sometimes on bicycles! They’ve been to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City eight times. Tracy and his wife raised three boys (one, a dentist, is deceased; one is a teacher, and one owns his own sprinkler system installation business), and a girl, who is a micro-biologist. They have 12 grandkids and two foster grandchildren. Yes, he said, if he could go back, he’d be a teacher again!

Post Script (on the faculty):

Interesting to note that while I was visiting with these faculty members I learned how many were hired in that period

by Mr. John Shaw, Supt. of Schools, by Warren Morgan, Assistant Superintendent (formerly principal of Arlington Elementary, where many of us attended), or by Jesse Purdy

(our principal in 1956-1960).

Mr. Shaw persuaded Mr. Coleman to apply to School District No. 81 from the Central Valley District….and the rest,

as they say, is history.

Lloyd Apitz

Around the Corner…….by Henson Towne

Around the corner I have a friend,

in this great city that has no end.

Yet days go by and weeks rush on,

and before I know it, a year has gone,

And I never see my old friend’s face;

for life has a swift and terrible pace.

He knows I like him, just as well

As in the days when I rang his bell,

And he rang mine. We were younger then;

And now we are busy, tired old men--

Tired with playing a foolish game;

Tired of trying to make a name.

Tomorrow”, I say, “I will call on Jim,

Just to say I am thinking of him.”

But tomorrow comes – and tomorrow goes;

And the distance between us grows and grows,

Around the corner, yet miles away.

Here’s a telegram, Sir. Jim died today.”

And that’s what we get – and deserve in the end.

Around the corner, a vanished friend.
